Overview
Working in or near potentially explosive atmospheres requires a clear understanding of the risks and responsibilities involved. The CompEx Ex Awareness (ExA) course is an entry‑level programme that introduces candidates to hazardous area safety and the principles of explosion protection. Developed by experienced practitioners, this theory‑only course explains key terminology, area classifications and safe working practices so that anyone—from laboratory technicians to contractors—can recognise where risks may exist and how to work safely.
By completing this hazardous area awareness training, participants will gain a foundational understanding of ATEX/IECEx compliance and be better prepared to support operations in industries such as oil and gas, chemical processing, manufacturing and utilities. The course serves as a stepping stone to more advanced CompEx qualifications.
Who is it for?
This awareness‑level programme is designed for anyone who enters, supports or interacts with hazardous areas, even if they do not carry out technical work. It is particularly suitable for:
- Procurement and supply‑chain personnel
- Project managers and engineers
- Laboratory technicians and apprentices
- Scaffolders, demolition teams and cleaners
- Surveyors, bid teams and external contractors
- Supervisors, safety representatives and operational support staff
There are no entry requirements for this course, making it accessible to all who need a basic understanding of hazardous environments.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
- Identify hazardous areas and understand when explosive atmospheres may be present.
- Understand the basic principles of explosion protection and recognise ATEX / IECEx zone classifications.
- Describe common ignition sources and control measures to avoid them.
- Follow safe systems of work such as permits to work and adhere to personal responsibilities.
- Know when to seek specialist support or raise safety concerns.
This course raises awareness and does not certify individuals to work on electrical equipment; those needing practical certification should consider the CompEx Foundation or higher units.
Assessment & Certification
Candidates undertake an online multiple‑choice examination consisting of 30 questions over 45 minutes. A minimum pass mark is required to achieve the CompEx Level 1 Certificate in Ex Awareness, which is internationally recognised and valid for five years. Successful completion demonstrates competence in hazardous‑area awareness and forms a foundation for further CompEx qualifications.
