Process Safety Awareness (PSA) – Introduction to Process Safety Principles
The “Blue Card”
Overview
Understanding process safety is critical for everyone working in high‑hazard industries—even those without direct responsibility for major hazard management. Process Safety Awareness (PSA) is a one‑day course developed to give apprentices, non‑technical staff and new employees a basic understanding of process safety principles, how they differ from occupational safety, and the important role each person plays in preventing incidents.
Participants learn about key legislation, hazard and risk identification, mitigation measures and emergency response. Real examples and interactive workshop activities illustrate the potential consequences of process safety failures and the importance of proactive safety culture.

- Apprentices and early‑career employees starting out in science or high‑hazard industries.
- Non‑process safety staff without line responsibility but who need awareness of process safety principles.

- Understand the basics of health and safety legislation in high‑hazard industries.
- Recognise the difference between process safety and occupational safety, and understand the principles and control measures that keep barriers strong.
